RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The state is offering three years of free credit monitoring to approximately 13,000 state workers whose personal information was mistakenly sent to the wrong people.

The Virginia Department of Human Resource Management said Conexis, Anthem’s subcontractor for Flexible Spending Account Services, sent that information to 11 state human resource and payroll employees.

"The personal data included employee names and social security numbers," Department of Human Resource Management Communications Manager Anne Waring wrote in a statement. "While the HR and payroll employees were authorized to receive agency and location-specific employee data, they received the entire participant list."

Waring added the state is working with Anthem to improve personal data protection.
