70-year-old man’s accused killer goes to court

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Michael Edward Elmore, 48, was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge Monday morning in Dinwiddie County General District Court. Elmore is accused of beating 70-year-old Carter Northington to death last week.

During Monday's arraignment, a December hearing was scheduled for Elmore who will remain behind bars at Meherrin River Regional Jail.

Northington's death has sparked community outrage and action. The community has raised nearly $6,000 to help pay Northington's medical and funeral expenses.

Northington, who was often seen walking in the Cedar Heart community dressed in blue jeans and suspenders, collected cans for extra money. He became known affectionately as "Can Man" to some in the community.

The “Cans for Carter” can drive, set up at a special dumpster in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Route 1, collected 1,800 pounds of cans. Those metal raised $1960 for Northington’s family for funeral expenses.
