‘Can Man’ drive, reward fund nets over $5k

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — The community has raised nearly $6,000 to fund the medical and funeral expenses of a 70-year-old found brutally beaten in Dinwiddie County last week.

Carter Northington was found beaten and unconscious with blunt force trauma to his head in the yard of a vacant house Monday evening. He died from his injuries Tuesday morning.

Northington, who was one of the best-known people in Dinwiddie County, was often seen walking in the Cedar Heart community dressed in his blue jeans and suspenders, collecting cans.

dumspterThe “Cans for Carter” can drive, set up at a special dumpster in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Route 1, collected 1800 pounds of cans. Those metal raised $1960 for Northington’s family for funeral expenses.

Additionally, a reward fund set up at the Bank of Southside Virginia raised over $4,000. That money will now go to Northington’s family for funeral expenses and medical expenses.

Forty-eight-year-old Michael Edward Elmore was arrested on a first-degree murder charge Friday. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Court records showed Elmore was convicted of grand larceny in 2010 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, but a judge suspended all ten years.
