CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Police investigating the shooting death of seven-year-old Brendon Mackey said they are analyzing newly found bullet shell casings that match the .40 caliber bullet that struck the child in the head.

Mackey was killed while walking to see a July 4 fireworks show at Sunday Park in Midlothian.

Some people walking along the Deer Meadow Trail in the Brandermill found the casings and called police.

CBS 6 News' Lorenzo Hall spoke with the man who found the shell casings. He didn’t want to be identified, but tells Hall, he doesn’t believe the casings are tied to this case, however he wanted to alert police just in case.

Police said the bullet that hit Mackey was likely randomly fired into the air less than two miles from Sunday Park. T recently discovered casings were found more than two miles away. Still, police will analyze the casings to determine if they are connected to the gun used in the Mackey shooting.

Some neighbors who live in Brandermill have voluntarily turned over their guns to police for analysis. Chesterfield Police Cpt. Chris Hensley said so far two of the seven guns have been ruled out as connected to the case.

Investigators are asking the public to call Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660 with any information that may help solve this case.
