Thursday afternoon update:

Gabrielle weakened to a tropical depression Thursday morning.  Maximum sustained winds have dropped below 39 mph — the threshold for tropical storm status.

Gabrielle is not showing any signs of strengthening, and may weaken further as it encounters terrain over Dominican Republic.

We will continue to monitor Gabrielle in the event that the storm strengthens at all.

Wednesday evening update:

Tropical Depression Seven formed this afternoon just southeast of Puerto Rico, and is expected to become Tropical Storm Gabrielle on Thursday.  The satellite image below shows the bright cloud tops from the new convection that developed this afternoon near the center of the depression.

Seven will increase in intensity to become Gabrielle while moving northwest over the next couple of days.  10:45 PM UPDATE: SEVEN HAS NOW STRENGTHENED TO GABRIELLE WITH APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TRACK.  The storm is then expected to take the turn to the north and northeast away from the U.S. early next week. -Zach
