RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- Just in time for the Labor Day weekend, drivers can expect to shell out a little less at the pump this year compared to last.

"I just feel like it's just a blessing that we can be able to do this," driver Pablo Bell said.  "It could be higher.  I look at the bright side and yes, I'm happy."

Bell said just a few days ago, he was paying nearly $7 a gallon in Canada.  But things are so expensive here in the Commonwealth, as gas prices are holding steady well below $4 as we inch closer to the busy traveling weekend.

"This is marvelous," Bell said.

AAA reports the state average right now is $3.36, which is below the national average of $3.54.  Both the local and national prices are not a shock for New York native Richard Ricca.

"You're numb at this point, you're numb," Ricca said.

But since moving to Virginia 16 years ago, Ricca happily welcomes the nearly 20 cents cheaper price at the pump.  It is a savings that is going towards an important cause.

"My daughter is going to NYU graduate school this year and that will help," Ricca said.

According to the AAA Travel Forecast 946,542 Virginians are expected to hit the road this Labor Day weekend.  Although gas prices are down 24 cents, drivers are projected to spend $946 this year compared to the $827 drivers spent Labor Day weekend last year.
