The NCAA is dealing with some bad publicity after turning down a hardship waiver request for incoming Rutgers sophomore transfer Kerwin Okoro despite extenuating circumstances.

CBSSports.com reports the NCAA denied the hardship waiver request for Okoro after the former Iowa State guard’s father and brother died within a two-month period last year. [BONUS: Click here to read more on this story from CBSSports.com]

The NCAA announced the call earlier this week. Okoro said he wanted to transfer to Rutgers in May in order to be closer to his family.

Okoro did hint about the decision on Twitter.

The school is appealing the decision. Okoro will have to sit out the year if the decision holds.
