RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Prosecutors have set a deadline to decide whether Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen McDonnell broke any laws when they accepted gifts from a political donor.

Federal authorities said they will decide sometime between now and Labor Day, which is  less than two weeks away, whether to file charges.

On Monday the lawyers for both the governor and first lady met with prosecutors in Alexandria to discuss the case.

This after the couple accepted tens of thousands worth of gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams, the CEO of Star Scientific. However, that money has since been repaid.

Additionally, the first lady bought $50,000 of the Glen Allen-based company's stock around the same time she hosted a luncheon for one of the company's new products at the governor's mansion.

Prosecutors are trying to determine whether Star Scientific benefited from the gifts or luncheon.
