ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WTVR) -- The husband of a Virginia woman whose body was pulled from a river over the weekend appeared in court Monday in connection with her death.

Investigators said 31-year-old Andrea Crew’s body was recovered from the Occoquan River Saturday morning. Crew was last seen alive three days earlier in Alexandria.

Police charged her husband, 27-year-old Caleb Crew, with murder, but have not given a motive or explained how the woman died.

However, friends and family members said they saw signs of abuse. In fact, neighbor Melissa Moran said Crew came running for help saying her husband had had thrown motor oil on her face while he was fixing his car last month.

"You could tell the love she had for her children,” said Moran, who was looking after the couple's two young daughters. “It breaks my heart because we've known them since they moved here."

The couple's children are in the custody of child protective services.
