FBI releases new photos of missing Nelson County teen

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- The FBI has released new photos of missing Nelson County teenager Alexis Murphy.

The surveillance photos are from the Liberty gas station where the 17-year-old who was last seen on Saturday.

Alexis was wearing a pink blouse, floral-print spandex pants, and brown boots and was carrying a dark and light colored grey purse.

The teen's car was discovered in a Charlottesville parking lot on Tuesday evening.

Local and state law enforcement, along with federal investigators are working around the clock to piece together clues in the teen's disappearance.

The teen's white Nissan Maxima was found approximately 70 miles from her intended Lynchburg destination, in a Charlottesville parking lot.

Liberty 2To add to the mystery, a K-9 unit traced a scent to an apartment complex located behind the lot where her car was found.  Retired FBI agent James McNamara told CBS 6 News, the feds have been pouring in resources and often in similar cases the factor of time can make a difference.

"I've worked on cases as other law enforcement officers have, where because you get out there early and fast and hard, you actually recover the victim alive," McNamara said.  "As an investigator you never set out with the mindset that the victim is dead.  You set out with the mindset that she's alive.  We're going to recover her, we're going to rescue her."

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson County High School Football field.
