NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstance surrounding the early-morning death of a man on Interstate 64 in New Kent County.

Police shutdown the eastbound lanes of the interstate for several hours Tuesday morning during their investigation. Traffic was detoured off I-64 at the Bottoms Bridge Exit (exit 205) until about 9: 30 a.m.

Police said about 1:30 a.m., they were called about a dead body on Interstate 64 around Henpeck Road Overpass (mile marker 207).

Police said the man had been struck by several passing vehicles. Police were looking for the driver of a white tractor-trailer with front driver’s side damage that left the scene. Physical evidence of the tractor trailer at the scene connected it to the wreck, according to State Police.

Police found the tractor-trailer mid-morning outside a business in the 7800 block of Pocahontas Trail in Williamsburg.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar with the Virginia State Police tells CBS 6 investigators are looking at all possibilities for what led to the incident, but said it is they do not know yet why the victim was on the interstate that early in the morning.

The man's body will be taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification.
