RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Police released the identity of the man shot and killed early Monday morning in Richmond's Fairmount neighborhood. The victim, 31-year-old LeSean L. Cosby, of Fairfield Ave., was found lying at the intersection of 22nd and W Streets, about 3:45 a.m., police said.

The crime scene is just feet away from a child development center.

"Violence is far too common in this area,” Peter Paul Development Center Executive Director Damon Jiggetts said. "But that's why Peter Paul exists, to make sure kids are safe and not perpetuating some of these same situations that play out in this community. We want parents and kids to know they're safe and well taken care of and there are alternatives to acts of violence."

Jiggetts said he was concerned about blood left at the scene as children arrived at the center this morning, several hours after the shooting.

Richmond Fire Chief Robert Creecy said once police detectives clear a scene, his units will sometimes be called in to wash away biological material, like blood.

He said a Richmond Fire unit did that early this morning, but nearly five hours later another unit was called in to clean some more. Chief Creecy said it's possible detectives asked the first unit to leave some evidence there as part of the investigation, but he did not know for sure. Richmond Police said they did not ask firefighters to leave.

Detectives remained on scene Monday afternoon, canvassing the area. They are looking for a black, four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Maxima, last seen leaving the neighborhood.

Detectives said robbery appeared to be the motive for the shooting and released the following three suspect descriptions:

  1. Black male in his 20s, between 5’7 and 5’10”, a slender build, medium complexion, last seen wearing a dark colored t-shirt and a baseball cap
  2. Black male in his 20s, between 5’7 and 5’10”, a slender build, medium complexion, last seen wearing a white t-shirt
  3. A third suspect is believed to have driven the getaway vehicle, which is possibly a black, four-door, older model, mid-size vehicle.
