BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A Virginia girl is earning accolades after she competed in the All-American Soap Box Derby last weekend in Akron, Ohio.<

Eleven-year-old Katelyn Harris is years away from getting her license, but is already a pro when it comes to driving her Soap Box Derby racer.

“I raced and I got second place in the world,” said Katelyn, who competed against nearly 70 other kids in the Rally Stock division.

The sport can be pricey. Cars run about $500 and the wheels are another $100. In addition, there is also the cost of traveling to races.

But Katelyn's parents said the payoff is worth the expense.

“I always stress if you put your mind to this, you will achieve. And she has, so I can't be more proud of her,” said Jenny Harris.
