LOS ANGELES (CBS News) -- A four-year-old cat that stowed away on a container ship headed from the Philippines to Los Angeles is doing better.

Los Angeles County Animal Control Director Marcia Mayeda said the orange and white female cat was near death after having nothing to eat or drink during the 7300-mile trip.

However, after two weeks of treatments, the feline is in fair condition.

“She was severely dehydrated, she received fluid… [and] she’s been eating really well. And she’s gained, from what I understand, over a pound,” said Jacquie Green, with the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center.

Green thinks the cat was living at the port in Manilla, and “wandered into a shipping container, probably it was warm and dry, and seemed like a safe place to spend some time.”

Hospital staff named the cat Pinay, a common name for a female Filipino.
