RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Minor league baseball teams across the country are known for coming up with creative promotions to attract fans to the ballpark.
Over the years, the Richmond Flying Squirrels have allowed fans to bring their dogs to the Diamond, invited television stars from the 70's and 80's to town and even fired someone out of a cannon -- all in the name of entertainment.
This week the Squirrels announced Thursday will be "Salute to Scandal Night" at the Diamond. As part of the promotion, the Squirrels will sell $1 hot dogs in recognition of the on-going scandal involving former U.S. Congressman and current New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner.
"Scandal night is meant to be a fun, tongue in cheek night and what hotter of a scandal right now than Anthony Weiner," Flying Squirrels Vice President and COO Todd "Parney" Parnell said in a statement. "His scandal just couldn't have come at a better time in regards to the Flying Squirrels promotional calendar."
Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011, recently acknowledged he did not stop sending raunchy online chats to women following his resignation. That resignation was prompted by allegations from several women that Weiner had sent them lewd photographs of himself.
Speaking at a news conference last week, the Democrat said he couldn't say for sure how many more women might come forward.
"There are a few. I don't have a specific number for you," Weiner said.
In a nod to Weiner's woes, the Squirrels have invited fans to "tweet pictures enjoying their $1 hot dogs to @GoSquirrels for the chance to win prizes."
