LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (WTVR) -- A woman accused of killing her newborn twins 15 years ago will remain in jail without bond.

That was the judge's ruling in Darnesha Berry's court hearing Thursday morning.

Police charged Berry with the twins' murder when DNA linked her to the case that had gone cold for 15 years.

Investigators believe the twins were already dead when they were tossed down a trash chute at St. Paul's College shortly after giving birth in 1998.

Berry sat quietly wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackles during the hourlong bond hearing during several heated exchanges between her defense attorney and the commonwealth’s attorney inside the Brunswick Courthouse.

Berry’s mother testified Thursday that she never saw her daughter pregnant in the winter of 1998. She also said that the family agreed that Berry turn herself in at the appropriate time.

Her mother also testified that Berry has never faced any criminal charges.

During questioning by the commonwealth’s attorney, the court learned from Berry's mother and a police officer that Berry refused three different requests to provide a DNA sample.

Also revealed in court, the fact that her three children have three different fathers.

"Obviously she wants to get back to her family,” Arnold Henderson, Berry’s attorney, said. “She misses her family, as most people would, she wants to get back there. So she's anxious to get out she's anxious to get through this ordeal.”

Berry’s parents and husband left the bond hearing not saying a word about what happened in court.
