FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WPLG) -- A piece of Florida history came crashing to the ground Tuesday morning.

Crews used 450 pounds of dynamite to demolish the Florida Power and Light Company.

The power plant and its signature candy-cane-striped stacks had been part of the Fort Lauderdale skyline for half a century.

The plant, which will be replaced by a state-of-the-art natural gas facility, was imploded by a series of controlled explosions. The blasts lasted about 60 seconds.

Construction on the new center is set to begin in 2014 and is expected to begin serving customers in 2016.
