CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR)–Police have been investigating for days after Brendon Mackey, 7, fell to the ground from a gunshot.

Police have determined the bullet is a .40-caliber class full metal jacket bullet. They said that type bullet struck Brendon before a fireworks display at The Boathouse in Swift Creek Reservoir.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, Brendon Mackey, 7, was walking with his father when he fell to the ground. At the hospital doctors discovered a wound that they say was from a bullet.

Brendon died at VCU Medical center as a result of his injuries on Friday, July 5.

The .40-caliber class also includes 10 mm rounds, police said. Forensics testing indicates the rifling on the bullet is mainly consistent with, but is not limited to, the following firearms manufacturers: GLOCK, Heckler & Koch, IMI, Kahr Arms and Vektor Pistols.

Police still need the public’s help to locate whoever fired the shot.
