What does Kroger-Harris Teeter deal mean for you?

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Grocery chains Kroger and Harris Teeter Supermarkets announced a merger agreement Tuesday morning. You can read more about the $2.4 billion deal here in the New York Times.

So what does the deal mean for shoppers and people who work at the grocery stores?

The company will operate 2,631 supermarkets in 34 states and Washington, D.C. According to a company press release, Harris Teeter stores will remain open and operating under the Harris Teeter name.

“There are no plans to close stores, and associates will continue to have employment opportunities with both companies,”the press release indicated. “Kroger headquarters will remain in Cincinnati, and Harris Teeter will keep its headquarters in Matthews, NC.”

Kroger operates 16 grocery stores within a 30-mile radius of Richmond. There are Harris Teeter grocery stores in Williamsburg and Charlottesville.
