PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) - A man was injured after he ran into a Petersburg apartment building around 11 p.m. Monday as he tried to put out a fire. Fire officials still have not officially determined what started the apartment fire at 1243 West Washington St.

Petersburg Fire Battalion Chief Tommy Barrett said it appeared the fire started in the kitchen of a unit in the two-story apartment.

Four people who lived inside the apartment were not home when the fire started, however one person decided to rush inside the building to put out the flames.

That man was overcome by smoke and had to be taken to Southside Regional Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation. That man is expected to be okay.

Fire crews said the fire caused an estimated $25,000 worth of damage to the building. They said there were no working smoke detectors inside the home.
