RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)--On Monday night, a baseball referendum struck out before a Richmond city council committee.

Charles Samuels, council president, wanted voters to decide the location for a new ballpark in November.

However most city council members apparently don't think that's a good idea, saying that voters may not have enough information to make an informed decision.

City residents on both sides of the issue spoke before the council committee voted on the ballpark referendum.

“I'm in favor of the referendum. I appreciate, Mr.Samuels putting that out there for us. It's a great addition to the democratic process in Richmond.”

“Putting a baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom is the worst idea I ever heard. And I’ve been down here 25 years speaking about bad ideas,” said one resident.

CBS 6 has learned Mayor Jones is developing his own proposal for a new stadium.

One council member even recommended setting a deadline for the mayor to bring his proposal forward for discussion.
