HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — A Hanover man will be allowed to keep his chimpanzees until the end of the year.

Two of Curtis Shepperson’s pets escaped from his property in 2010.

The county first learned Curtis Shepperson did not have the proper permits for all six animals when two of his pets escaped from his property in 2010. That’s when Hanover County officials told him that had to get rid of them.

A zoo in Houston offered to house the chimps, but are not able to take them until November.

The county voted Wednesday night to let Shepperson keep the chimps until that time.
