RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Starting next year, Virginia families that earn $60,000 a year or less will be eligible for free room, board and tuition at the University of Richmond. Right now that program is only available to students whose families earn $40,000 a year or less.

“We know that many families are seeking to secure a quality college education for their children within a challenging economic environment,” Nanci Tessier, vice president for enrollment management, said in a statement. “By broadening the income parameters of this program, we can expand the reach of the University of Richmond to become a destination for more talented students from middle-class Virginian families.”

Undergraduate students pay $55,000 a year to attend Richmond, according to the university’s website. Tuition is $45,000 with room and board making up the additional $10,000.

University spokesman Brian Eckert said the school does not consider a potential student’s ability to pay when deciding whether or not that student should be admitted. He said once a student is accepted, the university works with the student to help meet the financial need.
