HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — The Virginia Department of Transportation has closed a bridge over the Chickahominy River at the Henrico-Hanover county line after an inspection revealed some major problems.

VDOT closed the Route 625 (Greenwood Road) bridge, which around 800 vehicles use daily, after inspectors discovered corrosion and deterioration during an inspection Thursday.

Officials said the bridge will stay closed as engineers check the structure and decide what repairs are necessary.

“Once we can further evaluate the bridge’s condition, we’ll plan to repair or replace the bridge,” said Gary Martin, district bridge engineer.

When the bridge was last inspected in June 2012, the structure was deemed in fair, but safe condition.

As a result, the bridge had been scheduled to be replaced in 2015 for about $2.8 million as part of VDOT’s Six Year Plan.

VDOT has posted warning signs at intersections near the bridge to let drivers know about the closure.

VDOT offered these detour suggestions:

• Westbound Route 625 (Greenwood Road) – Route 660 (Winn’s Church Road) northeast to Route 623 (Cedar Lane) east to Route 626 (Old Washington Highway) south to return to Route 625 (Greenwood Road)
• Eastbound Route 625 (Greenwood Road) – Route 626 (Old Washington Highway) north to Route 623 (Cedar Lane) west to Route 660 (Winn’s Church Road) west to return to Route 625 (Greenwood Road)
