CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) -- Chesterfield police have arrested 18-year-old Devin C. Grant, the man suspected of exchanging gunfire with an officer just after 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Devin C. GRANTPolice said an officer on patrol in Matoaca Park came upon an occupied vehicle and during this encounter an occupant in the vehicle exited and fired multiple shots at the uniformed officer.

The officer was able to avoid the shots and returned fire without being injured.

The suspect then fled on foot into a wooded area where Police conducted an extensive search.  Police later identified the suspect as 18-year-old Devin C. Grant, of the 19500 block of Temple Avenue.

Police had set up road blocks near the park as they searched for the suspect and drivers told the station that they were not being allowed to drive to their homes.

Grant was later captured in the 4500 block of Willow Dale Ct. in Chesterfield.

Grant made his first court appearance via video Monday morning. He's charged with Attempted Capital Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer and Use of a Firearm in the commission of a Felony.

The judge denied bond for Grant. He says he plans to hire his own attorney and is due back in court Sept. 5.

Longtime neighbor Michael Gholson had no idea the drama in his neighborhood was connected to Saturday's officer involved shooting in nearby Matoaca Park.

"When you have an incident like that you think twice about taking your kids to play.  You just .never know what might happen "  Gholson explained.

Several neighbors told CBS 6 News they've spotted Grant in their subdivision before visiting a female friend.

They're relieved the arrest went down without any more violence.

"I was glad they did get him. He could have shot me because I was out here. I don't understand it. I just hope these young people out here really get themselves together because life is too short for a whole lot of foolishness," one neighbor said.
