RICHMOND (WTVR) – For the sixth straight year, SportsRadio 910 and Wes McElroy are hosting “Dad’s Day” to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research.

Sports fans are encouraged to donate money or bid on several packages geared towards fans of all sports. They include the opportunity to wave the green flag during a practice session at RIR, golf rounds at Viniterra in New Kent, and tickets to an upcoming VCU game plus a seat in Shaka Smart’s postgame press conference.

"We're challenging every sports fan and every listener to donate just one dollar" said Wes McElroy, afternoon host on AM 910. McElroy started Dad's Day at another station eight years ago and has continued the tradition in Richmond. It began in honor of McElroy's own father who was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998. Last year's event raised $10,000.

"It's touching when you hear these stories" McElroy continued. "Kids will come up and show you their insulin pump. They'll dump 100 pennies or 4 quarters in because that's their allowance money."

The fundraiser concludes this Friday, when McElroy's father will co-host his afternoon show. They will be joined by Flying Squirrels third baseman Adam Duvall who is also diabetic.
