AFTON, Va. (WTVR) -- Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Saturday morning in Albemarle County.

Albermarle County Police responded to a domestic situation in the 9000 block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike where an officer fired his weapon, fatally wounding a man dead.

According to WCAV, William Rothacker, the owner of the nearby apartment complex, said his tenants, a minister and his wife, woke up to gunshots.

Rothacker said the minister's daughter and her alleged boyfriend or ex-boyfriend were involved in the altercation.  Neither of them live on the property.

"A neighbor's husband told me there at the apartment across the street someone got shot, it might have been a boyfriend girlfriend situation but I didn't hear nothing you know, it's so wooded up here there's a buffer," William Johnson, who lives in the Afton Lodge apartments across the street, told WCAV.

Police have yet to say what led the officer to fire his handgun. However, officials did say the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of both the state police and internal investigations.

The officer did not suffer any injuries.

Rockfish Gap Turpike, also known as Route 250, was closed for a few hours from Route 151 to the top of Afton Mountain due to an investigation.
