RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- The CBS 6 Storm Team says Tropical Storm Andrea is moving northeast Friday through the Carolinas, hurling widespread rain into the Mid-Atlantic.
Andrea is already transitioning from a Tropical Storm to a Post-Tropical Storm, and will likely maintain weak post-tropical storm strength as it moves into southeast Virginia later this afternoon. The center of the storm will track between Williamsburg and Norfolk, then continue accelerating northeast along the East Coast tonight and Saturday.
You can expect periods of very heavy rain today. Much of eastern and central Virginia will receive 1.5 to 3 inches of total rainfall from late Thursday through early Saturday, with some areas receiving more than 3 inches of rain. Flood and Flash Flood Watches remain in effect for nearly the entire Commonwealth until tonight.
Wind gusts Friday afternoon in central Virginia will be as strong as 35-40 mph, but stronger gusts in the range of 40-50 mph will be likely along the Bay and Virginia's Atlantic Coast. There will also be a risk for isolated tornadoes along the coast to about 40 miles inland. A Tornado Watch is in effect for East Virginia until 8 p.m.
The bulk of the system will move northeast of our area pre-dawn Saturday
and will track northeast over the next two days through the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast states.
