CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A Chesterfield soldier was killed in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Spc. Kyle P. Stoeckli (Family photo)Spc. Kyle P. Stoeckli, 21, of Moseley, Va., was killed Saturday when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device in Maiwand, Afghanistan, the military released.

"He's a lovely boy, it's just incredibly sad what has happened," neighbor Elaine Jemi-Alade said.

Stoeckli was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

A Facebook page that appears to belong to Stoeckli indicates he attended Cosby High School in Chesterfield County until 2011.

American flagsDozens of American flags now line the street where Stoeckli's family lives.

"Two people in our neighborhood bought all these flag," neighbor Gwenyth Gaba said. "I think that was just our community saying thank you for being our hero."

"Spc. Stoeckli has perhaps been the hardest working and most motivated soldier in 3rd Platoon," 1LT Austin Caroe wrote in an April newsletter about the 3rd Platoon. "SPC. Stoecki continually demonstrates a willingness to volunteer for less-than-glamorous work details, and an extremely optimistic personality that spreads through the Platoon like a virus."
