STERLING, Va. (WTVR) — Authorities said a Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputy and a woman were shot at a Costco store in Sterling Wednesday afternoon.

The woman died and the deputy is recovering. WUSA reports that the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. at the Price Cascades Plaza location.

A customer shopping inside the store told a WUSA reporter that he saw deputies running into the store and then heard four to five shots fired.

The witness said employees inside the store told him that a woman with a knife had attacked the deputy

Authorities said that employees called police because the woman was acting strangely and had a knife in the rear part of the store.

WUSA said that witnesses say the woman was working with food samples and wielding a knife. Employees told WUSA that the woman was muttering something odd about pizza.

One deputy deployed a TASER. When that did not subdue the woman, a deputy fired, the sheriff said. One deputy was struck by a ricocheting bullet, the sheriff said at the press conference.
