Charges have been filed against the driver who dragged a man four miles after a vehicle crash that occurred as a result of the two drivers racing, according to police.

The crash happened the afternoon of Saturday, May 18. James City County Police responded to the scene, and said that two vehicles were traveling westbound–allegedly racing– on Richmond Road at a high rate of speed.

A 1997 VW sedan lost control near James City Recycling. The vehicle hydroplaned on the wet road, spun several times, and struck a tree ejecting the driver who was not wearing his seatbelt. The 30-year-old man was then run over and dragged approximately four miles into New Kent County by the second vehicle, a 1995 Honda sedan.

Left behind at the scene of the crash were two children of the ejected driver’s fiance. The children were wearing their seat belts. They were treated and released at the hospital. The ejected man died days later from his injuries.

The driver of the Honda, Michael Robinson, 22, of Providence Forge was charged Wednesday.

He is charged with causing injury or death while racing, leaving the scene and failure to render assistance to injured parties an at accident, failure to report an accident with injuries. All three of these charges are felonies.

Robinson is being held in the Virginia Peninsula regional Jail on a $ 10,000 secured bond.
