RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — Richmond leaders are considering a proposal to charge more per hour at city parking meters.

Currently, the city charges 50 cents per hour. The proposal suggests raising that fee by 25 cents, making meters cost 75 cents per hour.

Richmond leaders estimate the small change would generate $250,000 more for city projects such as education.

However, many Richmonders say they think the increase in meter fees will discourage people from visiting downtown for dinner or shopping.

"It's not going to help bring people into the city if there are events," says Trudie Allen, who frequently parks in Richmond. "I don't think it's a good idea."

The vote for the proposal is scheduled for May 28.
