RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- If you plan on traveling this Memorial Day, you may not have to fight traffic as much. The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts more people will spend the holiday closer to home. The organization said the unofficial start to the busy summer travel season could be down nearly a percent from 2012.
To blame for fewer drivers hitting the road may be because of the unpredictable economy and higher gas prices. But interestingly enough it's not just the price at the pump that is to blame, but AAA believes 'fee fatigue' at the airport may be too much for some travelers.
Still Virginia State Troopers said they will beef up patrol and join motorists on the roadways enforcing the nationwide 'Click It or Ticket' campaign.
Drivers can also anticipate construction zones to be lifted at noon today through noon Tuesday.
To help with travel plans, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has rolled out a map allowing drivers to use past traffic patterns to avoid heavily congested areas. The map shows where there has been little to no traffic, moderate backups and heavy congestion from the past three Memorial Day weekends.
