A tractor-trailer accident has closed Huguenot Trail (Rt. 711) in Powhatan.

The road is closed between St. Mary’s Way and Judes Ferry Rd. due to a tractor trailer accident.  VDOT says to expect closure for another one to three hours.

Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route.

At 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Virginia State Police responded to the crash after the driver of a 2004 International flatbed tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the roadway and over corrected.  The vehicle then ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

The driver, who was wearing his safety belt, suffered minor injuries and was assessed at the scene by emergency medical technicians, said police.

The trailer was loaded with cinder blocks.  Route 711 in both directions remains closed to allow for clean-up.

The driver, Mark P. McCoy, 47, of Richmond, was charged with reckless driving ; failure to maintain proper control, according to Sergeant Thomas J. Molnar with the VSP.

The crash remains under investigation.

VDOT suggests the following alternative routes, listed below.

If traveling westbound, use Anderson Hwy (Rt. 60) or River Rd. W (Rt. 6) to Maidens Rd. (Rt. 522).

If headed eastbound, use Maidens Rd. (Rt. 522) to Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60) or River Rd. W as alternate routes.
