RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – An approaching cold front from the north has sparked scattered strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon.

Any storm that forms may produce frequent lightning, gusty winds and heavy downpours. The strongest storms may have a severe weather threat for damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.

After we lose the Sun’s daytime heating, storm intensity should weaken a couple of hours after sunset. By midnight, all should be quiet in central Virginia.

The cold front will continue overnight to track southward toward North Carolina early Friday morning. This front will stall there Friday, keeping at least a slight chance for scattered showers and storms in central Virginia Friday and through the weekend.
