RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- A  civil rights activist and minister offered a message of support to the Richmond community on Wednesday.

Dr. John Perkins was invited to Richmond by the non-profit organization Boaz and Ruth to celebrate its 10 years of serving the community.

The faith-based group's goal is to help rebuild lives in our community by providing training, jobs and economic revitalization.

Perkins praised the non-profit's work in the Highland Park community over the last decade.

"If we look closely at Boaz and Ruth, it could become a model of black and white, the rich and poor working together to build something very positive in one community that could be a prototype of what we can carry to other communities."

Perkins speaks to communities across the country about how they can establish community development ministries.

Perkins is the founder of the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development and co-founder of the Christian Community Development Association.
