UPDATE: Man found in recycling lived 17 miles from plant

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Chesterfield Police are investigating after a man's body was discovered Friday morning at the TFC Recycling plant on Old Stage Road in Chester.

Chesterfield Police Capt. Chris Hensley said workers found the body under an awning at the plant. Employees were sorting through recyclables when they found the body.

This plant receives recyclable material from across the state.  Employees then sort the materials, pack them up, and ship them out to various buyers.

Police consider the man's death "suspicious" at this point.  The Medical Examiner is working to determine the person's identity and cause of death.

In the 13 years the TFC plant has been open in Chester, Tad Phillips, general manager there, said this kind of incident has never happened before.

Several employees apparently saw the body when it fell out of a load of recyclables they were preparing to sort.  One employee, who saw the decaying body, could only describe the sight of it as "bad stuff."

Phillips said they are helping employees cope with the "traumatic" situation, and that everyone at the plant is praying for the victim's family.

Cpt. Hensley said police would release the man's identity only once the next of kin has been notified.
