WILCOX COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- A county high school in Georgia hosted its first-ever integrated prom this weekend.

In the past, African-American and white students at Wilcox County High School went to separate dances because the gatherings were considered private events organized by parents and students.

The superintendent of Wilcox County Public Schools stressed the segregated proms were not organized by the school.

Students were elated by the turnout.

"I really thing everybody has something to do with this. Even the people in the parking lot who aren't really participating," said one student. They all came here to support us."

Another student said she was in shock and could not believe the integrated prom was finally a reality.
