BOSTON (CBS) – Virginia Military Institute graduate and Massachusetts Transit Officer Richard “Dick” Donohue, Jr. is in “critical but stable” condition at the hospital, according to the CBS station in Boston.

Police said Donohue was shot in the leg during a Thursday night shootout with Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The bullets hit Donohue’s femoral artery. Doctors at Mt. Auburn Hospital said Donohue lost so much blood that his heart stopped beating.

“He required a prolonged resuscitation that took place both at the scene and our emergency room,” Dr. David Miller said.

Donohue remains sedated and on a ventilator.
