RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- More than 24 hours after the first explosions went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, many questions remain unanswered.

CBS 6 is learning more about the objects that caused the explosion, but leads on a possible culprit aren't being revealed to the public.

Thomas Badey, a political science professor from Randolph-Macon College, whose primary research field has been terrorism and political violence, said the FBI's classification of the act is very important.

The bombings are being called act of terror, as opposed to terrorism. He classifies an act of terror as a tragedy like the Virginia Tech shooting or the Newtown massacre, where no political motive or intent is present. Terrorism often comes from a group looking to make a statement.

"When you talk about terrorism, now you're talking about a political motive." Badey said.
