HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — Fire officials say a morning fire at an apartment complex in the Far West End has left five people without a place to live.
The fire broke out in the 1100 Westbriar Drive, near Patterson Drive, at the Westmoreland Square Apartments, around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Henrico Fire’s Jim Mellon said crews received several calls reporting smoke coming from the building’s upstairs window and roof.
Fire crews said the two-story multifamily dwelling had heavy smoke showing from the second floor and roof area.
Crews, who evacuated nearby units while other firefighters battled the blaze, quickly knocked down the fire in one unit.
Mellon said a total of four units were affected by the fire. One unit sustained fire damage with the adjacent unit sustaining smoke and water damage. The two other units had light smoke damage and the occupants will be allowed to return.
No one was injured and the Red Cross is helping the five displaced residents.
A fire investigator is working to find out exactly what sparked the blaze, which is believed to have started in the kitchen.
Officials said the apartment where the fire started had a smoke detector, but that it was not working.
