UPDATE: Police have released 911 calls and more details about the vehicle.
Two teenagers and state trooper are recovering from minor injuries after a bizarre crash on southbound Interstate 81, near mile marker 217 in Augusta County.
A teenage passenger in a Mazda Protege called to say the brakes weren’t working and the runaway car was going approximately 60 mph, but would gain and lose speed in accordance with the grade of the interstate.
State Police said that dispatch worked with the teens to try several solutions. As the car traveled southbound, police positioned themselves around the vehicle to keep other vehicles along the highway from being struck.
The car reached speeds over 100 miles per hour, said the teenage passenger. Eventually, the two teens jumped from the car.
Police said that Virginia State Police Sgt. C.J. Aikens then positioned his vehicle in front of the Mazda to stop and force it into the guardrail off the left shoulder of the southbound lanes of I-81. The Mazda was traveling at roughly 100 mph when it struck Aikens’ patrol car.
The 19-year-old driver, Amy D. Guevara of Harrisonburg, Va., was not injured, but was been taken to Augusta Health as a precautionary measure. The passenger, Sean Wies, was transported to Augusta Health for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Sgt. Aikens is also being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Augusta Health.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to investigate the incident. No charges will be filed.
