RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones joined other mayors across the state and country in honoring volunteers.

In Richmond, nearly 200 local people who volunteer their time in the community were recognized.

A ceremony was held this morning at the 17th Street Farmers Market in the city's Shockoe Bottom.

The people who were recognized do anything from helping the elderly and disabled with chores to being foster grandparents.
Speaking to the volunteers, Amanda Heeley of the Virginia Department of Social Services said thanked volunteers for their contributions to the community.

"You are investing in the quality of life now and in the future of this community," she said.

Tuesday not only marks a day of recognition, but also a day of service.

Following this morning's ceremony, many people volunteered their time today at various projects around the city.
