HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR)–Starting today, Hanover County residents will want to make sure they have their dog on a leash, or face a fine.

The county’s leash law is now in effect, which means dog owners could face a $25 dollar fine, and their dogs could be taken to the pound if found in violation.

The rule is in effect for any Hanover Parks & Recreation property and school grounds.

This rule applies throughout the year in suburban areas, but county leaders say it’s extended to rural areas between April 1 and June 30. It’s not new, and officials say it’s enforced during these months because of increased wildlife activity, higher chances of rabies, and livestock births.

Animal Control says that dogs on the loose should be reported by calling Hanover County Emergency Communications at 365-6140. For more information about running-at-large laws in Hanover County, call Animal Control at (804) 365-6485.
