HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Police said more than 50 cars have been rummaged through in Western Henrico County since mid-February.

Additionally, police said a half-dozen vehicles were broken into in Spring Tree subdivision on Tuesday night. And all of those vehicles were left unlocked.

As a result, Henrico police are starting a "Stop & Lock" campaign to remind folks who live and work in the county to lock their car doors.

Police said most thieves are simply pulling on car door handles, looking for unlocked vehicles.

"I had come in late last night from a volunteer activity and had foolishly left my purse in the car," Deb Serpe said. "I walked outside about 6:20 to defrost and noticed my car door was not completely shut."

Besides GPS units and cash, thieves made off with other items pilfered from the cars. Police and neighbors found some of the items scattered along the subdivision streets.

"A bag containing a computer and some other electronic things were taken out of the van," Andi Alberts, whose boss' car was broken into, said. "A neighbor found it and called her and told her come get it."
