HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Henrico leaders are worried about an uptick in the number of murders in the county.

At a meeting Tuesday night, the county released its annual crime report. The report showed 12 homicides took place in 2012. That's up from 9 homicides in 2011.

Henrico Police Chief Doug Middleton said officers are working to combat heroin use, another problem that appears to be on the rise.

"It seems to be making a little bit of a comeback right now," Middleton said. "And heroin in particular concerns us, because that particular... heroin drug results in a lot of deaths. People can overdose on it very easily. "

Middleton said the county is also working on a campaign to reduce the number of thefts, which topped more than 6,000 cases last year.

However, Middleton pointed out that most of those crimes involved people leaving their cars unlocked with valuables inside.
