NASA: meteor spotted Friday in Virginia was a boulder-sized asteroid

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Did you spot the meteor streaking across Virginia’s skies Friday evening? Many of you reported to us at CBS 6 that you saw a flash of light streaking across the sky around 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013.

NASA scientists determined that the fireball spotted by many in the highly populated East Coast region was caused by an asteroid about three feet wide.

Meteor expert Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., says asteroids of this size are regular occurrences, entering Earth’s atmosphere about once every two to three days.
