(CNN) — Colorado’s prison chief was shot to death with the gun found on a former inmate killed in a shootout with police in Texas, investigators said Monday.

Ballistics tests match the weapon with the bullets used to kill Tom Clements at his home in El Paso County, Colorado, last week, the county sheriff’s department announced. Investigators are still trying to determine whether Evan Ebel, the suspect in Clements’ slaying, acted alone and what his motive may have been — “and gaining these answers could be a lengthy process for investigators,” the department said in a statement on the ballistics test.

Ebel died Thursday evening, two days after Clements. He was shot and killed at the end of a high-speed chase that followed the wounding of a sheriff’s deputy in northern Texas.
