AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash on Route 607 that killed a Amelia High School student and seriously injured another teen.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said the driver of a 2000 Ford Mustang, 17-year-old Lucas Radford, lost control and ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree.

Molnar said the wreck happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday on West Creek Road near Old Courthouse.

Radford suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was flown to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.

The passenger suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was also flown to VCU Medical Center. Neither was wearing a safety belt.

Students gathered at the high school's football field to remember Radford, a fellow player, on Sunday morning.

The crash has left the community stunned.

"It's a shame this happened to us here in Amelia, to his family," Cory Hamilton, one of Radford's friends, said. "You never know who's going next. You have to live your life to the fullest and live it every day like it's your last."

The 15-year-old passenger, who was also flow to the hospital, has serious life-threatening injuries.

State police said that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. However, officials said speed was a factor.
