(CNN) — That sound you heard this morning was Ryan Gosling breaking his fans’ hearts. The actor’s hinted that he’s ready to take a break from the business.

“I just need a little break from myself,” Gosling, who’ll next star in this month’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” told the Hollywood Reporter.

The 32-year-old actor has seen his profile explode in the past few years. After cementing his heartthrob status alongside his former girlfriend, Rachel McAdams, in 2004’s “The Notebook,” Gosling’s tackled a wide variety of projects, but has consistently stayed in the spotlight. From 2010’s “Blue Valentine” to 2011’s “Drive,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Ides of March” to this year’s “Place Beyond the Pines” and “Gangster Squad,” the star’s been awfully busy.

“I got into the habit of just having a lot of options,” he told THR. “And then, suddenly getting option anxiety, and I need to get a little distance and give myself and the audience a little break.”

That’s one of the reasons why fans won’t see him perform in his directorial debut, “How to Catch A Monster,” which stars “Mad Men” actress Christina Hendricks.

“I think I’ve kind of over-saturated myself with myself, made a lot of movies and have lost a little perspective on what I’m doing,” Gosling said. “So this is a way for me to still make a film but have a new experience doing it. And see it from another perspective, which I think I need right now.”
